Heidsieck & Co Monopole is set to pop the cork from a bottle of one of the world’s most famous and expensive Champagnes, the 1907 Heidsieck & Co Monopole Gout Americain, and you have a chance to enjoy this rare opportunity with a seat at the dinner table.
Established in 1785, Heidsieck & Co Monopole, the fifth oldest Champagne house in France and the makers of today’s popular “Blue Top” Champagne, will give six lucky fizz lovers the chance to drink this most rare and unique Champagne that was once destined for the officers of the Imperial Russian army but found itself shipwrecked on the ill-fated voyage of the “Jonkoping” a Swedish schooner that was sunk in the Baltic Sea in 1916.
The Champagne, “Gout Americain” (or “American Taste” – a style of Champagne from the early 1900’s) is now over 100 years old and a survivor of eight decades under the sea.
Re-discovered in 1998 by a deep sea search, The Heidsieck & Co Champagne on the Jonkoping was found to be perfectly preserved, the constant temperature and under water pressure almost perfect cellaring conditions. Bottles were immediately snapped up at auctions, with one particular bottle breaking auction house Christies’ record for the highest price paid for a single bottle of Champagne.
In Australia, at Number 8 Restaurant and Wine Bar at the Crown Entertainment Complex, this famous fizz is currently priced at $13,200 a bottle, making it the most expensive Champagne to be found on any wine list in Australia.

The famous Heidsieck & Co 1907 Gout Americain Champagne was miraculously recovered from the wreck of a Swedish ketch called The Jonkoping off the coast of Finland, where it was sunk by a German submarine in 1916 on its way to the Russian Imperial Army in St Petersburg.
The wreck was found by a Swedish search team in 1997 and recovered in 1998. After 82 years under the sea the 2,500 bottles of the Heidsieck & Co 1907 Gout Americain Champagne were found to be preserved in excellent condition. Bottles of this champagne are now some of the rarest and unique to be found in the world.
